Death of an inmate – Steve Serré

On February 19, 2023, Steve Serré, an inmate from Donnacona Institution, died while in custody.

At the time of death, the inmate had been serving an indeterminate sentence, which began on January 28, 2022, for second degree murder.

Police were called to the fire at an apartment building at 190 Rue Saint-André at about 5:30 a.m. on Jan. 26.

At the scene, police met with three people who had managed to escape the burning building.

A fourth person was extricated from the scene by Gatineau firefighters and was treated by paramedics, but was pronounced dead at the scene.

Serré was arrested at the Hull jail, where he was being held in connection with another case.

As in all cases involving the death of an inmate, the Correctional Service of Canada will review the circumstances. CSC policy requires that the police and the coroner be notified.
