On May 19, 2024 Robert Pickton was assaulted by another inmate at Port-Cartier Institution.
As a result of the injuries he received from this attack, he was placed in a medically induced coma and life support. On May 31, he succumbed to these injuries and died in hospital.
The inmate’s next of kin have been notified. Correctional Services Canada have also contacted registered victims, in accordance with their specified notification preferences.
In 2002, the remains or DNA of 33 women were discovered on Pickton’s farm.
Pickton would only be convicted of six counts of second degree murder in 2007.

Pickton also bragged to an undercover officer he killed 49 victims.
In a media statement, Correctional Services says that the safety and security of our institutions remains paramount. A Board of Investigation is being launched to investigate the facts and circumstances of the attack that led to Pickton’s death.
According to Correctional Services Canada, this will help to identify if policies and protocols were followed and possible corrective measures.
“We are mindful that this offender’s case has had a devastating impact on communities in British Columbia and across the country, including Indigenous peoples, victims and their families. Our thoughts are with them.”
