On September 24, 2023, Matthew Marshall, an inmate from Atlantic Institution, died while in custody at the Atlantic Institution in Renous, New Brunswick.
At the time of death, the inmate had been serving a sentence of 10 years, 9 months and 6 days which included assaulting a peace officer, firearm charges and a 2014 robbery.
In a 2018 Brantford Expositer article, Marshall was called a career criminal by a judge, his record included almost 60 other convictions.
As in all cases involving the death of an inmate, the Correctional Service of Canada will review the circumstances. CSC policy requires that the police and the coroner be notified.
