On June 27, 2023, Thomas Straub, an inmate from Millhaven Institution’s Regional Treatment Centre, died while in custody following an illness.
Straub was declared a dangerous offender by the court in 2020 and handed an indeterminate sentence.
The indeterminate sentence meant that Straub was required to take rehabilitation measures for a chance at parole after seven years and/or every two years after that.

He was declared a dangerous offender after he after he pleaded guilty to two counts of robbery, assault with a weapon, forcible confinement and breach of probation.
Straub had a long criminal past that included 90 convictions. 29 of these were for violent acts or threats of violence.
Most of his crimes were against women, this included 2 sexual assaults and masturbating in front of his caseworker.
“As in all cases involving the death of an inmate, Correctional Service of Canada (CSC) policy requires that the coroner be notified.”
